Hello there, 2C families!

I was so happy to be able to get in touch with all of you on the phone this week. Hearing your voices has made me realize how much I’ve missed our class! I just wanted to let you know that we’ll be posting home learning options each week and you can find them over on the Grade 2 page. So check them out there.

If ever you need to get ahold of me, you can send me an email: julia.mazerolle@nbed.nb.ca

Happy Easter weekend! Stay healthy,

Mme Mazerolle

Be sure to check out the 3 part video of the 1J production of Stone Soup!  Three young stars from our class worked very hard to put this play together.  We performed it for all of the grade one classes and they were terrific!

The kids had a bit of a hard time with the last list - climb especially, so I kept those words up for a while and added three new words to that list last week.  how now house   So sorry I hadn't updated that on here.  Those three words were included on the list given out at parent teacher.   This week we're starting fresh with four new words: was saw walk all   Was and saw tend to be difficult words to learn because they have the same letters, just mixed up.  We'll be spending some time on those.  Also, all is a chunk that I noticed 1J has a difficult time spotting in a larger word when they're trying to solve a word they don't know - for example small.  They don't spot the all.  We will be focusing on the all word family this week.
There are pictures posted in the "1J's Green Thumb" gallery of the science experiment we did in class today.  I'll add pictures showing our results very soon!  :)

made home goes climb   We're continuing our vowel work this week, focusing on the long vowel sounds again.  For made and home, we will be talking about the magic e on the end that hops back and makes the other vowel say it's own name.  Goes is our two vowels go walking rule that came up last week.  Climb is our tricky word of the week...that silent b is not playing by the rules!

March 22 words: seen been eat please   We are focusing on the long /e/ sound.  The rule we've been talking a lot about in these past few weeks and applying now is: when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking (and it says it's name).  Here is a fun song that goes along with the rule: http://pbskids.org/lions/videos/twovowels.html On the website there's also a song for the "ee" - our two vowel rule still applies to the "ee", but I'd like them to see the "ee" and KNOW the sound it's going to make without having to go through the two vowels rule.  http://pbskids.org/lions/videos/doublee.html

Something that we're working on daily in Math is applying our skip counting to actual objects. Many of the students in 1J are expert rote counters - they need to be able to count by 2's to 20, 5's to 100 and 10's to 100.  But just because they can count aloud doesn't mean they've made the connection between rote counting and counting groups of objects.  For example, if they're counting how many fingers we have in our class, it makes sense to count by 5's or 10's.  We call it finding the lazy way to count.  Not everyone has made this connection.  If you see an opportunity to count in groups of 2, 5, or 10 - ask your 1Jer to help you out and GO FOR IT!  :)

We worked on descriptive writing this term.  The students wrote a piece telling as much as they could about their mittens.  Then they drew their mitten as an illustration to go with their writing.  I have their writing displayed proudly on our bulletin board in the K-2 hallway.  It’s a matching game: match the mitten with the writing.  We’ve caught many people stopping and admiring our work.  :)
