Math homework

Posted: September 10, 2012

Good evening friends and families!          You may have noticed that your child brought home two math sheets in his/her homework duotang tonight. One is a place value chart and the other is a number sense chart. As I said in the welcoming newsletter, I would like your child to read each night in French and English. I would also like him/her to practice his/her math facts - any practice of number sense will help them this year in math. I have showed them the game "Guess the Number" that they can play with you or siblings to allow for this practice for homework. They can also play with cards - adding/subtracting/multiplying or dividing them as they go through the pile of cards. I will show them some more games/activities throughout the year that can help them to improve their number sense.     I decided to give the students the sheets today and a few numbers to work with (filling in either sheet with those numbers) in case you were having trouble at home coming up with some ways to practice math.               The first sheet (see attached in English) just asks your child to place a number in the correct spot on the place value chart (thousands, hundreds, tens or ones) spot. They can either fill in each number appropriately or can draw the correct base ten blocks in the appropriate column. The second chart has them writing the number in standard form (the number itself, say 4321); in expanded form (for example 4000+300+20+1); operations – which can be any operation that will lead you to 4321 (for example 4X1000+150+171=4321); money (draw bills/loonies etc…) a place value chart to write the numbers in the correct boxes; a base ten block chart where they will draw the number in flats, rods, cubes, etc…; and a number line, where they can place the number on the number line correctly.             The forms are attached here in English for you to look at. Your child can use a dry-erase marker with the sheets to work with numbers. Then they can erase them and keep on working/trying other numbers.             Hope this helps! Have a great night! -         Miss Breanna Flanagan
